From Street to Home: The “We Live Together” Story
We Live Together was started in 2012 in Syros as a voluntary movement by the veterinarian Manolis Vorrisis. Having arrived in Syros in the middle of 2010, it didn’t take long for him to realize the dire situation of the island’s homeless cats and the need to improve their living conditions. This need stems from the pain of the animal itself and also from the need to enhance the cultural value of the island. Is it possible to talk about civilization when we have so many animals suffering?
Our journey took a significant leap in 2012 with a powerful initiative: a photo exhibition that opened the public’s eyes to the plight of the island’s homeless cats. This event was a turning point, significantly raising awareness and setting a precedent for our future endeavours. From that point until 2018, we worked hand in hand with citizens and organizations to conduct mass neutering programs in municipal areas.
At the same time, a program for adopting homeless cats was started. After rescue and rehabilitation, these cats were taken to foster families for a better life. In 2024, hundreds of cats have been rescued and adopted.
In 2016, realizing that homeless animals need inclusion, it started the scheme of Cat Cafés, which recommends upgrading the spaces where cats live and are fed by volunteers.
2018 was a pivotal year for us. We established the social cooperative enterprise “We Live Together”, a significant step crucial in expanding our initiatives. One of our first actions was staging the play, The Pirate Cats of the Aegean, at the Apollo Theater in Hermoupolis. We founded our social veterinary clinic the following year, intensifying our Rescue-Sanitization-Adoption project and conducting yearly school visits.
At the same time, in 2018, he founded the veterinary clinic of Tinos, carrying out similar actions in Tinos.
Neutering actions have also been carried out on the islands of Amorgos, Folegandros and Koufonisia.
We Live Together AMKE was founded in 2024, a testament to our commitment to continuing to expand the action and relieve more animals’ lives.
